Couple reunited on el Día de los Muertos
"Death cannot stop true love"

Writing this as an update, since the painting is now finished and available as desktop wallpaper, potentially as a print!

This is for the Día de los Muertos enthusiasts, gay, straight, any orientation and identity! The painting itself depicts El Día de los Muertos, true love reunited for one night.

The natural world has always lent itself to the vivid human imagination in the absence of explanations for inexplicable phenomena. El Día de los Muertos is very much akin to the Irish and Scottish Samhain, which has since been turned into Halloween; a feast in honor of the one time that the spirits of the dead can return to earth. It's a night of avoiding hostile spirits but mostly of rejoicing the lives of our departed loved ones as we welcome them home for one night.

These closeups are just a preview of at least one romantic painting that is coming this fall! It’s an homage to the phrase from The Princess Bride, “Death cannot stop true love. All it can do is delay it for a while.”

The couple, reunited in a style reminiscent of Sandro Botticelli's work, is very much meant to evoke that.

The marigold, or "cempazúchitl" in Nahuatl, is heavily associated with the dead; its fragrant essential oil has been used in Honduras to wash and clean the corpse as it is prepared for burial and the marigold is commonly distributed and planted in cemeteries in Mexico and Central America.

The inclusion of the peaks of Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl (also known as "La Mujer Dormida") in the background is a nod to the tragic romance between Popocatepetl, a fierce warrior, and Iztaccihuatl, the emperor's daughter. Their story combines Sleeping Beauty with Romeo and Juliet. Turned into mountains out of pity by the gods, the volcano Popocatepetl still seethes over the loss of the woman he loved.
